Exploring the Seafood Scene: Salt Cellar Owner’s Culinary Journey to Baltimore

During a recent trip to Baltimore, Maryland, the owners of the Salt Cellar Restaurant embarked on a culinary exploration, seeking inspiration from the vibrant seafood scene of the East Coast. Their journey led them to uncover a treasure trove of seafood recipes, deeply rooted in the rich maritime traditions of the region.  They found themselves immersed in the flavors and techniques unique to Baltimore’s culinary landscape.

Captivated by the city’s culinary ingenuity, some bold flavors and rustic charm (quite similar to the Salt Cellar), the owners eagerly absorbed every detail, envisioning how it could be re-imagined within the ambiance of the Salt Cellar Restaurant.

As they ventured further into the heart of Baltimore, they encountered a diverse array of seafood delights, from succulent crab cakes to baked clams & roasted oysters. Each dish offered a glimpse into the region’s culinary heritage. They were delighted to find that Baltimore’s well know crab cakes have already been well replicated at the Salt Cellar.

A Taste of Baltimore Tradition at Mama’s on the Half Shell

During our culinary exploration of Baltimore, one stop that stood out was Mama’s on the Half Shell, a classic Baltimore seafood restaurant that has been serving locals and visitors alike since 2003. As a family-owned and operated establishment, Mama’s on the Half Shell holds a special place in the hearts of Baltimoreans, reminiscent of the iconic seafood houses of the past.

Our visit to Mama’s was a delightful journey through their menu, starting with their famous Clams Casino. The clams were perfectly cooked, topped with a golden breadcrumb mixture and bits of bacon, creating a harmonious blend of flavors that set the tone for the meal. We also indulged in their Roasted Oysters, served on a half shell and garnished with chopped parsley and a lemon wedge. The oysters were a testament to the freshness and quality of seafood that Mama’s prides itself on.Mama’s crab cakes are a true Baltimore classic, fried to perfection with a hint of mustard, embodying the essence of the city’s seafood tradition.

Another highlight of our seafood exploration in Baltimore was our visit to Jimmy’s Famous Seafood, a renowned establishment known for its innovative approach to seafood. One dish that captured our attention was their grilled calamari, a refreshing twist on the traditional fried calamari that most are accustomed to.

The calamari at Jimmy’s Famous Seafood is prepared with care, grilled to perfection with pepper strips that add a vibrant burst of flavor and color to the dish. The light grill marks on the calamari not only enhance its visual appeal but also impart a subtle smokiness that complements the natural sweetness of the squid.
